Beady Eye- The Roller

I've sort of been avoiding Beady Eye after hearing their first two singles. Over here at Freak Out Music we are team Noel and Liam's solo releases so far have been utter shit. I do like this song though so I decided to post it. Still can't wait for Noel to release his solo album and smoke these fools. Or even better they can all make up and we can have Oasis back. Wishful thinking...

Fleet Foxes- Helplessness Blues

Sweet beautiful depression. This song is the most beautiful song about feeling helpless and down on yourself. The opening lines say it all "I was raised up believing that I was somehow unique. Like a snowflake distinct among snowflakes unique in each way you see. And now after some thinking I'd say I'd rather be a functioning cog in machinery serving something greater than me" Pretty downer material there.. But be being down never sounded so good. Sweet beautiful depression.

The Kills- "Satellite"

The Kills - Satellite by DominoRecordCo

We posted The Kills cover of "I put a Spell on you" a couple of weeks ago. Now listen to their new song from their upcoming album Blood Pressures. Enjoy!

Communion Party in Brooklyn

Yesterday Ben Lovett from Mumford and Sons had his second Communion show in Brooklyn, NY. Communion is basically a showcase of bands performing one after another to create an awesome night of music. The bands on the lineup were as diverse as ever. What started off as a folksy country showcase ended up as a loud rock show leaving my ears ringing. Definitely a crazy mix. The first three acts to come out on stage were all country based.

The first on the lineup was Dawn Landes from Louisville, Kentucky. Her songs had a gritty country/folk sound which she delivered well. Her set was filled with songs about love and also about getting your heartbroken... The vicious circle of life.. Overall it was a nice set that reminded me of being back home in Knoxville, Tennessee. After Dawn Landes finished up, Ben Lovett came out to introduce the next band David Mayfield Parade and he made a point to mention that they were "Fucking Amazing".

Patrick Wolf - The City

Patrick Wolf is back with a new look and I don't really like it.. The Hard Times look is more fun. But I love his new song and video. A bunch of sexy people splashing around in the sea and a sax man blowin sweet sounds under the pier. That's a recipe for an A plus plus video.

Oh Land live from Hiro Ballroom Review

Arriving to the venue you can tell this would be a special show. Even though it was cold and rainy, people were lined up around the street waiting to be let into a sold out Hiro Ballroom. That is dedication by the fans. Oh Land rewarded them by giving it her all during her performance. Soon after everybody got inside, the lights dimmed and Oh Land took the stage. The stage was occupied by Oh Land, her drummer Hans and a bunch of crazy light up balloons. During the show at different points the balloons would project her face on them and serve as backup singers. Yeah I know that sentence sounded weird but that's what happened... Anyway Oh Land did a great job owning the stage by dancing all over it. It was amazing seeing the energy she brought to her performance. Her songs consisted of all types of synthesizers mixed with her unique voice. After playing about an hour long set consisting of such hits as "Sun of a Gun" "White Nights" and "Wolf and I" Oh Land left the stage. When coming back on for her three song encore, she surprised the audience by playing a cover of Fleet Foxes "White Winter Hymnal" followed by "We Turn it Up" (Which turned into a crowd sing along) and she closed out the set with "Rainbow". The crowd gave Oh Land a warm reception and she honestly seemed grateful. By the time the show was over a heavy snowstorm hit New York leaving the crowd walking out into what could only be described as a Winter wOHnderLAND... Yeah I went there. Anyway the show was great and be sure to check her if she comes to your area. Her live shows are a guaranteed fun time.

Little Dragon | Feather

You may recognize her voice from the Gorillaz 'Plastic Beach' album??? I will be covering this show Sunday (Jan 30) at The Parish in Austin, TX. I predict a crowd of concert goers swaying back n forth with Lone Star Tallboys in hand....can't wait!

Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers (Director: Tarik Saleh)

Li Li Li Listen to this while watching the official video of the song that has been an earworm for us since we posted a few weeks ago.

Sleigh Bells- Rill Rill

Sleigh Bells has come a long way since I saw them last year at SXSW. Cool to see. I love these guys.

Guards- Resolution of One

GUARDS ep Cover Art

These guys were one of the openers for the Vaccines last week. I was sort of blown away from them. They reminded me of a harder MGMT if that makes any sense. Anyway you can hear their whole EP for free on their site by clicking Here. You might as well check them out.

Tapes n Tapes- Freak Out

Check out this video from the Tapes n Tapes for "Freak Out". This video makes me wish that I wasn't only  8 for New Years 1994... It seemed like a blast. Anyway this song is a given to make it on the blog considering we are all about freak out music... As a matter of fact I declare this song the anthem for Freak Out Music!

SXSW Artist to Watch: Oh Land

We've been covering a lot of rock lately so we decided to change things up a bit and go with electro-pop artist Oh Land. Hailing from Denmark, this former ballerina is making quite the name for herself. From being an unknown this time last year to signing with Sony Records isn't an easy thing to do. What makes Oh Land standout to me is her unique voice. Add in some electronic beats and you have a star in the making . After having generated a lot of buzz for herself at this years CMJ Fest she is currently finishing up her first studio album. The album comes out on March 15.. Right in time for SXSW. She played the festival two years ago but this time she is coming in with a wave of momentum, so be on the look out for her. You can hear some of her songs over at her Sound Cloud page. Also if you are in New York be sure to see her play at Hiro Ballroom this Wednesday Jan 26. Check out her videos below. Enjoy!

The Vaccines Live from the Glasslands Review

Bands like The Vaccines are always the hardest to review. There is so much hype surrounding these guys it's ridiculous. These British rockers have already received the Arctic Monkeys treatment without even releasing an album yet. People are quick to compare them to the Ramones and the Strokes, but I don't think that's a fair comparison. If the show tonight proved anything, it was that the Vaccines are their own band and they are poised to take the music world by storm. What made them so great is the fact that they seemed to have perfected the art of what I like to call "Gloom Rock". With song titles like "Post Break Up Sex" and "A Lack of Understanding" it's hard to deny that these guys have some serious issues that they are dealing with. The songs deal with feeling alone, losing someone you cared about, and miscommunication.

The Vaccines- If You Wanna (Live from Jools Holland)

Can't get enough of these guys. "If you wanna come back it's alright, it's alright if you wanna come back to me". Sadly I can very much relate to these lyrics right now.. (Please come back to me!) But anyway enough about my personal problems.. The Vaccines are playing a show tomorrow in Brooklyn that hopefully we will be able to attend. The head of Freak Out Music is recovering from a sickness so hopefully he will be able to get healthy enough for the show.

Dirty Guv'nahs Live from New York Review

So the Dirty Guv'nahs from Knoxville, TN decided to come to New York and play a show. The results? A southern rock dance party in the middle of Manhattan. It was funny seeing these guys will the crowd into the show. Typically a New York crowd is very chill and almost too cool to dance. That's what the show started out like, but the Dirty Guv'nahs weren't going to have that. At one point early in the set, the lead singer James Trimble yelled something along the lines of "You better appreciate this right now! We'll be playing Madison Square Garden soon enough!" It's hard to win over a NY crowd, but the fearlessness that the Guv'nahs showed quickly won over the crowd. It was truly one of the few times that I have seen a NY crowd dance and drunkenly holler throughout the show. Near the end of the set, it was apparent in the vibe from the crowd that they didn't want the show to end. One thing was clear by the end of the show.. The Dirty Guv'nahs are a force to be reckoned with and if they keep it up, they just might be playing in Madison Square Garden one day. Check out the setlist after the jump.

Kings Of Leon - Knocked Up (Lykke Li vs Rodeo Remix)

For no other reason than it's just damn good! Also check out her live version of this song, just as haunting! We just recently posted one of her new songs 'I Follow Rivers' and its catchy as hell.

Suuns - Up Past The Nursery (SXSW 2011 Artist to Watch)

It 's hard not to like this song as it plods along like a 3-minute movie soundtrack to your life and what you are doing at the moment. They will definitely warrant a visit at SXSW! If you have ever heard Clinic, then you'll realize rather quickly that they have too.

SXSW Artist to Watch: Jeff the Brotherhood

We did a write up for Jeff the Brotherhood after last years SXSW, but we decided to update it a bit making them an artist to watch at SXSW 2011 since they've accomplished a lot this past year... So anyway.. These guys are pure rock and roll. You can't get more raw sounding than these two brothers from Tennessee. Jake is the singer/guitarist and Jamin plays drums. Sounds simple, but after hearing them you wouldn't believe there are only two people in this band. Their music ranges from bluesy rock to psychedelic jams. Most of the sound they bring is loud and dirty. Over the summer these guys really broke into the scene and started to make a real name for themselves. Go see these guys if you have a chance because their live show is insane. If you don't believe me check out their recently released live album from Jack White's Third Man Records. They were easily one of the top shows of SXSW 2010 and they look to continue rocking our faces off. Check out some clips of these guys below after the jump.

The Apples in stereo - Dance Floor - Video

Is it weird that I DANCE-CLEAN my apartment to this song?? It's much more efficient, especially if your roomate's not home.

Best Coast- Crazy for You

Cute video for this song by Best Coast. Love the lyrics to this song as well. I think we are all a little unstable in relationships. Either that or I'm fucking mad. Anyway enjoy the vid.

Peter, Bjorn, and John- Breaker Breaker

Don't blink or you'll miss this this video from Peter, Bjorn, and John's upcoming album Gimme Some.

MONA- Teenager

Mona has been all over the blog lately... Well here is their new video for Teenager.

The Dirty Guv'nahs- Baby we were Young

What happens when you have the fans ask you what to do for your music videos? The Guv'nas found out and I'm not going to lie... It looked like fun. Kick back, relax, and check out this video from these southern rockers from Tennessee. And for you New Yorkers out there looking for a good time, be sure to check these guys out when they play the Canal Room this Thursday.

The Kills - I Put A Spell On You (SXSW 2011 Artist)

In honor of The Kills returning to SXSW 2011, and after their brilliant appearances in 2008, I must post this. I was honestly arroused when I heard they would be playing SXSW this year. For all whom have never seen them live, just try and not fall in love with Alison Mosshart as she's screaming with sweat drenched hair pieces plastered to her face, and giving you what you think are 'F' me eyes (They're not, trust me). They playing in support of their new ablum out in early April. We will be covering many show at SXSW 2011 so stay posted.

SXSW Artist to Watch: Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

SXSW 2011 is coming sooner rather than later. With so many bands playing every year it's almost impossible to go wrong with what you see. What makes SXSW so great every year is discovering new bands who are on the verge of breaking out. Last year some of those bands for me were The Drums, Royal Bangs, and Warpaint. We are going to try a new feature on our blog showcasing some of the bands that we think you should make an effort to see this year at SXSW. I mean seeing Bright Eyes would be great, but we all know in order to see them you would have to be a badge holder and get there 6 hours before the show. No need for that headache. SXSW is all about up and coming bands. The first band that we want to feature is Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

Glasvegas - The World Is Yours

I have been waiting for their sophmore effort, and this single does not dissapoint. Following suit form their first album, you still have to strain your ears to understand a single lyric, but it never matters b/c of how pretty their melodies are. They went for the live show, anthemnic (see the song title) crowd pleaser. This song has a sprinkle of young U2 with a dash of dark, spacy Muse effects. This will be a staple in their live sets for years to come!

Bryan Greenberg- You Can Run (Ft. Kid Cudi)

If you love the HBO show How to Make it in America you should enjoy this song by two of the actors. I love the fact that Cudi is always open to making different types of music.

Limousines- Very Busy People

Wow I remember loving this song about 2 years ago.. Really surprised that they just released the video.. Or has it been out?

*EDIT: Just got word from The Limousines that this video isn't official. Apparently they were just fucking around in front of a green screen and somebody made this. I still think this is cool, but it isn't official.

Crystal Castles- I'm Not in Love (Ft. Robert Smith)

One of my favorite songs of the past year gets a video. Nothing amazing going on in this video but this song is too good for me not to post.

Mona Live from the Mercury Lounge Review

After having to cancel their show in Brooklyn yesterday due to weather, Tennessee band Mona rocked the Mercury Lounge. Fresh off their tour in Europe, these guys seemed grateful to be back in the states. The band came on after a rocking set by Devin Therriault (who we will cover later). Mona doesn't even have an album out yet, but that didn't prevent them from playing H.A.M (Hard As a Motherfucker). One thing I was worried about coming into the concert was whether the singer would have the same singing chops as he had on the studio mixes. Luckily the guy can flat out sing and delivered in a live setting. The setlist was short, but that's to be expected for any band without an album out. They played their radio hits "Listen to Your Love" and "Teenager" along with other songs not yet released. Overall these guys have a lot of potential and I would love to track how these guys develop as time goes on. Full setlist after the break.

Band to Watch: Royal Bangs

The Royal Bangs continue to build buzz. After being featured at SXSW and playing the festival circuit during the summer, they are on the verge of releasing their third album, Flux Outside which is out March 29. This band from Knoxville, Tennessee has a hard sound to define.  It's always nice for a band to create their own sound, and that is exactly what Royal Bangs have done. Their sound ranges from loud rock anthems to electronic jams. They do this in their own way without being gimmicky or trying to rip off other bands. Also a fair warning for when you see these guys live... They play loud and the crowd is known to turn into a dance party. If you don't believe me watch the videos below.. So if you haven't heard of the Royal Bangs you are missing out on a band that I think is destined to be huge. It's hard to describe a type of noise or what makes music sound good, so go ahead and listen to them yourself below.

Niki & The Dove- DJ Ease My Mind

Awesome vid/song from Niki and the Doves. Sounds very much like a Bat for Lashes/Bjork fusion.

Brother- New Years Day (NSFW)

Blindeye Films - Brother 'New Years Day' from Blindeye | Films on Vimeo.

Awesome song and video from Brother. WARNING: THIS IS NOT SAFE FOR WORK.. Unless your work is cool with naked chicks together in a bathtub.. Who knows.

Kanye West & Jay Z- H.A.M

OK so this track definitely doesn't let down. If the whole album is filled with songs like this it will truly be epic.  I'm not even kidding or exaggerating... This song is epic filled with hard rhymes and church beats. Give it a listen.
*EDIT: The Youtube was taken down. To hear the track you have to like their page on Facebook.

Lykkie Li- I Follow Rivers

Lykke Li -  I Follow Rivers by dynmk

New song from Lykkie Li's upcoming album Wounded Rymes

Anthony and the Johnsons- Everglade

A sleeping Kate Moss surrounded with random doodles somehow goes perfectly with this song. I don't really know why, but it works to make a pretty awesome video.

The Naked and the Famous- Girls Like You

Might just be me but I truly feel like this is as close to extacy that you can get in music. Really like the promise this young band is showing.

The Vaccines- Post Break-Up Sex

So what did you expect from your post break-up sex? Awesome lyrics to this song from these up and comers. They formed in the middle of 2010 and are already another band on my watch list for 2011

Radiohead for Haiti

Fanmade and Radiohead approved. Here is the whole concert for Haiti that Radiohead earlier in 2010. Enjoy!

Swiperboy - I'm Blue

If you follow college basketball, you may have heard of Renaldo Woolridge AKA Swiperboy. He is a basketball player from the University of Tennessee who also happens to rap. Tennessee fans know him from his school hits such as "Footvol" "Eric Berry" "Orange and White" and "Never Leave you like Kiffin". While those songs are fun, people outside of Tennessee probably don't care too much about them. Over here Swiperboy proves that he is much more than a Tennessee cheerleader and goes hard on his new video "I'm Blue" proving that he is a real threat in the rap game. Check out the video above.

Girls - Thee Oh So Protective One

They're young, but this is a big step from the debut...They have HORNS!!! Anyway i can't get this song outta me head piece.

Band to Watch: MONA

Alright kids time to discover a new band. The buzz surrounding Mona is growing at a rapid pace setting them up for a huge 2011. NME already listed them as one of the top bands to watch for this year and MTV UK has already featured them as one of the brand new bands for 2011. If you haven't heard this four piece rock band from Nashville, then you best begin to educate yourselves. Their sound is hard to describe but reminiscent of early Kings of Leon (before they became the Jonas Brothers) meets U2 with a British flare. Intriguing combination right? Have a listen yourself below. They just recently got back from Europe (where they are  and are playing 3 shows in New York next week. We will report back with coverage from their shows. Check out them out on at their MySpace over here for more information and watch their videos below. Enjoy.
