Coachella Bands to Watch
Oh yes everyone it's that time of the year again. SXSW is a distant memory and Coachella is about to start and kick off music festival season. The greatest season of them all... This year has a sick lineup with Kanye, The Strokes, Arcade Fire and the Jonas Brothers. Wait what? That's the Kings of Leon not Jonas Brothers? My bad.. their last two records had me confused... Just kidding.. Sort of. Anyway lets get down to the important things and start laying out some more under the radar bands that you guys should check out by showing a video accompanied by a short blurb.. So let's begin.
Twin Shadow
What is it with this guy? At first glance he looks like just another Brooklyn hipster that tries too hard.. But after he sings it all makes sense. Hipsters could only dream of being this effortlessly cool. This guy is great and killed it at SXSW. Definitely worth checking out.

Strokes Played Homecoming Gig at MSG Last Night
As the thousands of hipsters ironically packed into MSG you could feel something special would go down as NY heroes The Strokes played their first show in the garden. As the lights went out the crowd was surprised to see Elvis Costello take the stage. "April Fools motherfuckers!" he yelled and then went into a quick three song set of "Radio Radio" "Pump it Up" and "(What's so Funny about) Peace Love and Understanding" Minds were blown. After his set the headliners took the stage. The Strokes have been getting a lot of flack for phoning it in recently at their shows. This wasn't the case tonight...

The Turkeys: Story of the Band that Never Was
I remember two years ago I was given the task of covering hot buzz band The Turkeys. Might have been the worst weekend of my life as these guys all were the worst of the worst.. Brilliant music but terrible people. Their struggles with alcohol, drugs, voodoo and enormous egos caused them to break up that weekend.. Above is the cover of their never released album "Fallen on the Side of the Road" These guys fell alright... They fell hard.
The names Peter, Jackson, Justin and Matt were looking to be as recognizable as John, Paul, George and Ringo. Didn't work out that way.. At all. I'll give you the cliff notes of my time with these turkeys.

Drums Debut New Lineup in Free NY Show
The drums debuted a new lineup at a free show last night at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. While the show was billed as free, the cheapest beers were 8 dollars... So does that count as free? The new lineup consisted of two new members and some shuffling around of the band. The biggest change was the former drummer is now the lead guitarist. The new lineup didn't hinder the band though, because they still rocked it. The venue was tiny and the crowd turned into a mini moshpit as the concert kicked off. The drums played the hits such as "Best Friend" and "Let's Go Surfing" mixed with some new songs. I didn't catch the names of the new songs, but they had the whole crowd dancing. You can tell that from last years SXSW to today these guys have become comfortable on the stage. Judging by the rowdy crowd at this show... The Drums look to be around for a while.

Band to Watch: The Dig
\
The dig are a four piece rock band straight out of New York. I just discovered them after they opened for Brother at the Mercury Lounge last night. I came out of the show loving both bands, but came out more impressed with these guys. They came out dedicated to rock. Proof of this dedication lied in the keyboard/guitar player playing with a cast on both his foot and his arm. When I asked him what happened he said that he fell off the stage at one of the SXSW shows.... That's hardcore. The Dig's sound consists of catchy lyrics and guitar riffs that get you to bob your head and move around a little bit. The singing would alternate between the guitarist and bass player. Since it's hard to truly describe what they sound like, I thought it would be best to just post some YouTube's of them below. Please check them out and if your interested, their album Electric Toys is available on iTunes. I listened to it after the show and they sounded just as good in the studio as they did live. Watch some of their videos below.

SXSW Artists to Watch 2011
It's that wonderful time of year again. The SXSW Festival in Austin. So many acts and parties to attend. This is the time where you realize how little pull you have by not getting allowed into most venues, even if you did pay $100 for the stupid wristbands. Let's face it... You probably won't be able to get into most of the big shows going on unless you stand in line forever waiting to be let in to the venue. Even then they will only allow badges in first. It's a rough go so be prepared to miss out on Kanye this year... Last year I was sort of glad that I couldn't get into the big shows like Muse and Hole. I had more fun seeing as many "small" bands that I could find. I ended up discovering bands like The Drums, Local Natives, Jeff the Brotherhood, Warpaint and Sleigh Bells just to name a few. Below are some bands to watch out for this year. There is so much to see at SXSW that I'm sure that we are going to discover all types of new bands when it's all said and done. We'll report back with any new musical discoveries. In the mean time watch the videos below of artists playing SXSW and have a great time at the fest. Don't party too much.. Made that mistake last year. No regrets though..

Yelawolf and Cyhi Da Prynce celebrate Fat Tuesday in NYC
Yelawolf was certainly a highlight of SXSW last year. Ever since I saw him at the Fader Fort, I've been wanting to see him again. I actually had tickets to see him play a New York show in December, but unfortunately got in an argument with the girl I was with and left during the opener.... Don't worry she was one of those "Being nice is a sign of weakness" "Show a girl you're not interested and treat her bad for her to like you" girls... Not my style.. Whatever.. Her loss... Anyway I was really excited when I saw that I'd have another chance to see Yelawolf at the Highline Ballroom. I was even more excited that his opener was Cyhi da Prynce.

Blood Orange Surprise Brooklyn Show
You may know Devonte Hynes as Lightspeed Champion, but last night he made a surprise appearance at Public Assembly in Brooklyn as his side project Blood Orange. This is just one of his many side projects. When he's not involved in his own music he is writing and producing for other artists including Florence and the Machine and Basement Jaxx. The appearance was part of a monthly event in Brooklyn called Communion, which showcases a lot of up and coming bands from around 7 to 1 AM in the morning. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite events in the city and I discovered a lot of new bands to cover last night. He was added to the bill last minute after 1,2,3 dropped out. I personally thought that this was an improvement. Blood Orange is similar to Lightspeed Champion except the music has more of an 80s feel to it. So far Blood Orange videos have been emerging on YouTube that feature his music set to 80s background. He also performed on Alexa Chung's last show dressed as a wizard. You can watch some of those videos below. As of last night his stage setup consisted of a laptop making beats and a him on guitar. It was a really strange set that included some bad ass guitar solos mixed with him dancing around on stage. The songs were morbid but catchy. Blood Orange is supposed to release an album sometime this year. It will be interesting to see where this project goes, but be on the lookout. Read below to see some Blood Orange videos and a Lightspeed Champion one just in case you don't know.

Strokes on SNL
So the Strokes were the musical guest on a Miley Cyrus hosted episode of SNL last night. That's right.. This is probably the only (and hopefully last) time that these two are billed together. The Strokes played their new song "Under the Cover of Darkness" and debuted a new song called "Life is Simple in the Moonlight" I am anxiously anticipating this album because every song so far sounds completely different. Watch the performances below.

Songs about Emotions...
Let's give it up for emotions! They can be good or they can be bad. Nothing better than a song about emotions. That could be love, hate, joy and so on. Here are some emotionally charged songs that I've been jamming for the past week. Oddly enough it's been a lot of folksy stuff. Don't know what the point of this post is... Good songs below though!

Curren$y freestyles over Gold Panda's "Heaps"

Yes this is real... It's actually sort of badass. Kanye rapping about having alien sex mixed with Katy Perry singing the hook makes his earlier collaboration with Justin Bieber seem normal. Anyway check this song out and see how Kanye makes Katy feel extraterrestrial.. I wonder if Russell is jealous?

Sad Love Songs....
So as you all know today is Valentines Day. What you may not know is that it is also my birthday. You may think "Wow that's a cool birthday to have" You couldn't be more wrong. Nobody wants to celebrate your birthday because they are with their significant other and all that can do is remind you of the one that got away. So instead of posting my favorite sappy love songs such as "Something" by the Beatles, I've decided to focus more on the songs representing the lost loves, heartbreaks, and other things that I listen to while thinking about former girlfriends. So without further ado, I present my favorite sad love songs that will probably get me through the day... Happy Valentines Day everybody!
